Mining Essentials Program is Making Waves

MiHR is kicking off a first-of-its-kind delivery of the Mining Essentials Program. The program is taking place at École secondaire catholique Thériault in Timmins, ON through a partnership between Conseil scolaire catholique de district des Grandes Rivières, Collège Boréal, Élargir l’espace francophone, Gouvernement du Canada, Destination Réussite; Ministère de l’éducation de l’ontario; Nation métis de l’ontario.  Ten learners will get the chance to participate in the program with more on the waiting list. This is the first time the program has been delivered at the secondary school level, giving these young students the opportunity to see what mining is all about.

This early introduction to mining is very important for the industry. As the mining workforce ages and the need for skilled workers grows, there is a need to build the workforce, starting with youth. Timmins has a long history in the mining sector and these youth hope to continue this legacy.

Mining Essentials has reached yet another milestone! The first delivery of Mining Essentials in the province of Quebec took place and learners will be graduating mid-February. MiHR in partnership with Tata Steel Canada, and First Nations Human Resources Development Commission of Québec (FNHRDCQ) and Le Conseil Scolaire des Premières Nations en Éducation des Adultes (CREA) ran a delivery in French in Matimekush-Lac-John and in English in Kawawachikamach. This delivery was made possible through a Partnership Agreement with the CSMO-Mines aimed at helping promote the Mining Essentials program in Québec.
